OTC Medications for Acid Reflux & Heartburn
Acid reflux and heartburn can often be effectively relieved with medication. There are several types of acid reflux remedies and heartburn medications your doctor may recommend. These include:
Antacids
Antacids, like TUMS®, Maalox® or Rolaids®, neutralize the acid that’s currently in your stomach to help relieve heartburn and indigestion.
H2-blockers
H2-blockers are acid reflux medications. They are absorbed into your bloodstream after you swallow them. They help reduce the amount of acid your stomach produces by blocking the signal to your brain that tells the body to make acid. This type of acid reflux remedy is available in stores over the counter – brands include Pepcid® and Zantac® – or by prescription.
PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors)
PPIs are an acid reflux medication taken by mouth. They work systemically (in the bloodstream) to reduce the amount of acid your body releases into your stomach by inhibiting the chemical process in your body that actually produces stomach acid. They’re available by prescription only, and brands include Nexium® and Prevacid®.
Alginates
Gaviscon® is a type of acid reflux and heartburn medication called an alginate. Alginates work non-systemically (not in the bloodstream) to form a protective barrier in your stomach that helps block acid from splashing up into your esophagus (throat). Because they actually prevent stomach acid from reaching the esophagus instead of merely decreasing the acid your body naturally produces, alginates are particularly effective for relief of acid reflux and heartburn.
